Remineralizing gums are sugar-free gums made with hydroxyapatite and, often, xylitol. Here's what those ingredients are and how to choose a pack.

What is hydroxyapatite?

Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate mineral, the same mineral that makes up most of tooth enamel. Nano- and micro-hydroxyapatite have been used in toothpastes in Japan for decades and are now appearing in chewing gum.

Chewing sugar-free gum after meals increases saliva flow, which helps neutralize acids, and xylitol is a sugar alcohol that mouth bacteria can't ferment the way they ferment sugar. These gums add to brushing, flossing and dental checkups; they don't replace them.

How to choose

  • Sugar-free: if xylitol matters to you, look for it near the top of the ingredient list.
  • Hydroxyapatite type: labels may say nano (n-HA) or micro hydroxyapatite. Amounts often aren't disclosed.
  • Flavor: mint is the most common; some brands offer fruit flavors.
  • Pack size: a piece after each meal uses a pack quickly, so larger packs are better value.

How to use it

Chew a piece for about 20 minutes after meals or snacks when you can't brush. Keep gum away from dogs: xylitol is highly toxic to them, even in small amounts.
