Dubai chocolate is a thick chocolate bar filled with pistachio cream and toasted kataifi pastry, the combination behind its famous crunch. This guide covers what to look for in a bar, kit or filling.

What is Dubai chocolate?

The bar that started the trend came from Fix Dessert Chocolatier in Dubai, whose pistachio-and-knafeh bar spread across social media in late 2023 and 2024. The filling borrows from knafeh (kunafa), the Middle Eastern dessert made with shredded kataifi dough: the strands are toasted in butter until crisp, folded into pistachio cream and sealed inside milk or dark chocolate.

Since then, chocolatiers and snack brands around the world have released their own versions, and many people make it at home with kataifi and a pistachio filling.

How to choose

  • Filling: the best bars are generously filled. Photos of a cut bar tell you more than the wrapper.
  • Pistachio content: read the ingredients of the cream. When pistachios come before sugar and oil, the flavor is nuttier and less sweet.
  • Chocolate: milk chocolate is the classic pairing; dark chocolate cuts the sweetness.
  • Bar, kit or filling: ready-made bars are easiest; kits and pistachio-kataifi fillings let you make bars, cups or dessert toppings.

Storage and making it at home

Keep bars somewhere cool and dry, away from sunlight. If your kitchen is hot, refrigerate, then let the bar sit at room temperature for a few minutes before eating. Once opened, eat within a few days: kataifi slowly softens as it absorbs moisture from the cream.

To make your own, toast kataifi in butter until golden, let it cool, mix it with pistachio cream, and spread it into a mold lined with melted chocolate. Cover with more chocolate and chill until set.

Frequently asked questions

What does Dubai chocolate taste like?

Sweet and nutty from the pistachio cream, with a crunch similar to toasted phyllo, wrapped in creamy chocolate.

Is Dubai chocolate gluten-free?

Usually not, because kataifi is made from wheat. A few kits use gluten-free kataifi; check the label.

How long does it keep?

Sealed bars carry a best-before date, often several months ahead. Once opened, the crunch fades within a few days.

Does it contain nuts?

Yes. Pistachios are the main filling ingredient, so it isn't suitable for people with nut allergies.
