Cold brew is coffee steeped in cold water for many hours, which makes it smooth and low in bitterness. It's also the easiest base for an espresso martini at home. Here's how to choose concentrates, cans and mixers.

What is cold brew?

Cold brew is made by steeping coarse coffee grounds in cold or room-temperature water for roughly 12–24 hours and then filtering them out. It tastes smoother and less bitter than hot coffee poured over ice.

The espresso martini (vodka, coffee liqueur and fresh espresso shaken until foamy) was created by London bartender Dick Bradsell in the 1980s and has become one of the most-ordered cocktails of recent years. Cold brew concentrate is a convenient way to make it at home.

How to choose

  • Concentrate or ready-to-drink: concentrates are diluted with water or milk (follow the label); cans and bottles are ready to pour.
  • Caffeine: cold brew can be strong, so check milligrams per serving, especially for concentrates.
  • Black or flavored: many cold brews are sweetened or flavored. Choose black for cocktails.
  • Whole beans: cold brew blends are roasted for steeping at home.

Popular picks

Classic espresso martini

Shake 2 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur and 1 oz fresh espresso or strong cold brew concentrate hard with ice (add 1/4 oz simple syrup if you like it sweeter). Strain into a chilled glass and garnish with three coffee beans.

For an alcohol-free version, shake cold brew concentrate with a coffee syrup and a splash of cream. Refrigerate opened cold brew and use it within the time shown on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Is cold brew stronger than regular coffee?

Concentrate is. Diluted cold brew can be similar to or stronger than drip coffee, depending on the ratio, so check caffeine per serving.

Can I use cold brew instead of espresso in an espresso martini?

Yes. Concentrate makes a strong, rich cocktail, while fresh espresso gives the thickest foam.

How long does cold brew last?

Unopened, until the date on the pack. Once opened, refrigerate it and follow the label.

Why is cold brew smoother?

Cold water extracts fewer of the bitter compounds that hot water pulls from coffee.
